In this video, teenage students will be introduced to "The Summer Before Boys" by Nora Raleigh Baskin. In spite of the title of this book, your main character isn't just some silly, giggly girl. Sure, Julia discovers boys--or at least, one particular... boy--during the titular summer in this story. But the boy in question is more like a symbol of something else: the fact that Julia is growing up, and that she's growing up without her mother around. At its heart, "The Summer Before Boys" is a story about what it's like to be the child of a deployed soldier. But its messages about what remains steady, even in the face of uncertainty, will ring true for any reader. This is a great resource for motivating upper grade readers. (1:25)

In this Pick of the Week video, teenage students will be introduced to "Alien Invasion" by Brain Yansky. Summary--It's just another ordinary day in Jesse's high school existence when the aliens invade. In ten seconds, 90-some percent of the human rac...e is dead, and Jesse's bad day is about to get a whole lot worse. Enslaved by the little green men (yes, really) who have taken over the planet, Jesse must perform menial labor with a small collection of other surviving humans. One thing they all have in common? Jesse and the other survivors can "hear"—meaning they can exercise some kind of telepathic power. And it's this power of hearing that quickly convinces Jesse that their conquerors may not be as powerful as they think they are. "Alien Invasion and Other Inconveniences" manages to weave together sci-fi trappings and teenage drama into a humorous, fast-paced story about finding the courage to stand up for—and defend—who you are. This is a great resource to entice and encourage upper grade readers. (1:26)

In this video, teenage students will be introduced to "Thirteen Reasons Why" by Jay Asher. Can seven cassette tapes change your life? If you're high schooler Clay Jensen they can. That's because Clay is one of Hannah Baker's thirteen reasons--one of ...the thirteen reasons she committed suicide, as detailed on each side of these seven heartbreaking, enlightening, and thought-provoking tapes.
"Thirteen Reasons Why" is both surprisingly entertaining and surprisingly compelling for a book about suicide. But it still offers up a poignant lesson for open-minded readers. How much impact can idle gossip or a careless word have on someone else? "Thirteen Reasons Why" answers: More than you'd like to believe. **This book does deal with mature content.** This is a great resource to motivate upper grade readers. (1:21)

In this video, teenage students will be introduced to "Notes From the Midnight Driver" by Jordan Sonnenblick. After 11th-grader Alex crashes his car and decapitates a gnome (all while under the influence) he's assigned to 100 hours of community servi...ce to pay for his transgressions. Little does Alex know that those 100 hours are going to feel like a whole lot more, because he's just been assigned to visit the crankiest geezer on the planet—Solomon Lewis, who doesn't know about Alex's transgression, but who has a few of his own. It may not come as much of a surprise that these two end up forming an unlikely bond, but what both Alex and Sol learn from their friendship makes for an anything-but-predictable ending to this humorous and bittersweet story. This book does deal with mature content. This is a great resource to motivate upper grade readers. (1:34)

In this video, teenage students will be introduced to "What Comes After" by Steve Watkins. Iris Wight has it rough. Her father's dead. Her best friend's family has decided they can't keep her. Alone and hurting, Iris ends up at horrible Aunt Sue's wh...ere her only solace is the goats ... and even those, Iris discovers, can be taken from her in an instant. The first half of "What Comes After" is a particularly tough read, but Iris is a compelling protagonist whose falling-apart life still has moments of pure beauty—and welcome humor. You won't be able to put this book down until you're sure that Iris has found her way—which, through sheer determination (and some unexpected allies) Iris actually does. This is a great resource to motivate upper grade readers. (1:20)

In this video, teenage students will be introduced to "A Crooked Kind of Perfect" by Linda Urban. Zoe Elias has dreams of a perfect life. This perfect life includes, but is not limited to: a father who can actually leave the house, a mother who doesn...'t work such long hours, a best friend who hasn't abandoned her, and last but not least, a piano. Unfortunately for Zoe, real life isn't quite so perfect, and besides her parent and friends issues, Zoe must also deal with an instrument that's nowhere near the Carnegie Hall Wonder she was envisioning. That's because instead of a piano, Zoe has been gifted with an organ, and instead of classical music, she's forced to learn 70s TV theme songs at the hands of a rather eccentric organ teacher. Luckily for Zoe, though, real life has its own kind of perfection—one that she'll unwittingly discover by the end of this quirky, lovable tale. This is a great resource for motivating upper grade readers. (1:28)
