Charles Hobson, producer of the PBS Great Performances program Harlem in Montmartre, brings to The New School the story of the jazz age in Paris between the First and Second World Wars, a fascinating but neglected piece of African American history. I...nspired by William A. Shacks book of the same title, his documentary contains rare archival performance footage of James Europe, Josephine Baker, Sidney Bechet, Bricktop, Eugene Bullard, Django Reinhardt, and many more. Using photographs and film clips from the 1920s and 30s, Mr. Hobson discusses his film and the extraordinary role played by French artists and intellectuals in advancing the acceptance of jazz as a serious art form. 3:52 The song is called "J'attendrai Swing". On this Demonstration, I not only restored the sound from the original film taking out the hissing and pops and bringing the tones back to the audio. But also fixed two
parts of the film that was edite...d wrong when it was originally made in
1939.
You can tell to two parts I fixed as they are the only parts of
the film that now have Fade/Blending Edit Cuts instead of just Straight Edit Cuts. One edit is from Stefano Grappelli's Violin Solo into Django Reinhardt's Guitar Solo. And the second is from the Guitar Solo back to Grappelli. Watch all the other videos of this film and you will see what the difference is. And so I am proud to be the one after 71 years.

50:25 This DVD features a unique biography of Louis Armstrong, one of the greatest Jazz musicians in history. Armstrong defined what it was to play Jazz. His amazing technical abilities, the joy and spontaneity, and amazingly quick, inventive musical... mind still dominate Jazz to this day and only Charlie Parker comes close to having as much influence on the history of Jazz as Louis Armstrong did. As one of the first soloists on record, Armstrong was more responsible than anyone else for jazz changing from an ensemble-oriented folk music into an art form that emphasized inventive solo improvisations.
