This video segment adapted from NOVA scienceNOW explains how geophysicist Klaus Lackner and two engineers, Allen and Burton Wright, teamed up to develop a technology to capture an important greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide (CO2), in the air. Modeling t...heir design after a tree—and one of Lackner's daughter's science experiments—the team tested different materials, configurations, and coatings that together would act as leaves do to remove CO2 from the air. However, instead of mimicking photosynthesis, their process uses a manufactured fabric that attracts CO2 and pulls it out of the air for subsequent storage. Closed captioning included. Run time 05:25.

Ever wonder what a pinecone does? Let's make sense of it with science. Pines are evergreen conifers and the oldest living trees on the planet. This informative, short video gives great facts about male and female pinecones and how pollination occurs.... Content is appropriate for upper elementary and middle school students. This is a good resource for a lesson/unit on trees, living things, and/or pollination. It would work well in conjunction with a non-fiction/fiction story/book on trees, plants, pinecones, etc. (1:47)
