Risk, Exposure and Health
From learner.org, produced by Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics
We all require food, air, and water to survive — which are contaminated to some extent by man-made pollutants. Two studies, one in a rural western mining town and another in a dense urban population, reveal how these exposures impact health, and what can be done to reduce the risks.

Atmospheric Pollution
From learner.org, produced by Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics
Once released, air pollutants react chemically with each other under solar radiation to become even more dangerous secondary pollutants. A company in the Northeast U.S. tracks the emission of pollutants at street level, while an international long-term study follows plumes of pollution from Mexico City across the continent and beyond.

Rising and Sinking
From learner.org, produced by Science Media Group
Why does a hot air balloon rise into the sky? Why does ice rise in water when a lump of solid wax will sink in a jar full of melted wax? In this session, we’ll generalize the model we’ve developed about what rises and what sinks, using the idea of balance of forces.

The Photosynthesis Song! Learn How Plants Make their Food
From educationalvideos.com
In this video, students will learn about photosynthesis through a cute song with illustrations. When we breathe, we take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide and water vapor. Nature has a wonderful way to maintain equilibrium to make sure there is always enough oxygen to keep us alive. This is how plants help us through a process called photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use up carbon dioxide from the surrounding air and water in the presence of sunlight, to create glucose, which they use to live and grow. This process is most important for the survival of all the animals on earth because plants give out oxygen in the process, and the glucose and animals use sugars that are created, as food. As a result of this, plants are called autotrophs, or organisms that produce their own food. Content is appropriate for upper elementary and middle school. (1:52)

"Miss Nelson is Missing" Read Aloud
From YouTube, produced by storybookreading
Students will enjoy meeting Ms. Viola Swamp in this "Miss Nelson is Missing" read aloud. The kids in Room 207 were misbehaving again. Spitballs stuck to the ceiling.  Paper planes whizzing through the air. They were the worst-behaved class in the whole school. So begins this quirky classic, first published in 1977 and still relevant today as a lighthearted reminder to show our appreciation to those we value. The students don’t proffer a shred of respect for their good-natured teacher Miss Nelson, but when the witchy substitute Miss Viola Swamp appears on the scene, they start to regret their own wicked ways. Lake Nyos Gas Density Demonstration
From YouTube, produced by Rod Benson
To avoid accidents, this experiment should be done by teachers in front of students, not by the students themselves. This is a great way to show students that carbon dioxide gas is heavier than air. It also helps them understand the unusual natural disaster at Lake Nyos in Africa. In 1986 a tremendous amount of carbon dioxide gas erupted from the lake, and then flowed down through a village, killing 1,700 people. The video is a narrative, step-by-step demonstration with explanations. (03:59)

Buy Me That: Helping Kids Understand Advertising
From YouTube
In 1990, HBO, in a collaboration with Consumer Reports Television, aired the first of three half-hour specials about children and advertising. The programs pulled back the curtain on many of the techniques and tricks used in TV commercials. Since the programs were clearly teaching "media literacy" the programs became popular with teachers and media educators alike.  Alas, the videos are no longer available, although some libraries may still have them on the shelves. Now, here, for the first time, it is available. I have created some critical thinking questions and links to video clips so that you can teach "techniques of persuasion" and more.  See lesson plan accompanying this video.  (03:02)

Pearl Harbor-December 7, 1941
From awesomestories.com
Because the clouds have cleared on Sunday morning - December 7, 1941 - every pilot has an unobstructed view as hundreds of Japanese airplanes approach Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

With strike force orders from the high command, and detailed information supplied by Takeo Yoshikawa (a Japanese spy at Pearl), pilots know their individual targets.  In 110 minutes, the U.S. Pacific Fleet will be horrendously crippled.

At 7:58 a.m., Lt. Commander Logan Ramsey dispatches an urgent message:

Air Raid on Pearl Harbor.  This is not Drill.

The Arizona, and most of her crew, have only minutes to live.  The ship will burn for three days.

Because the surprise attack is so effective, American resistance doesn't really begin until the second wave of the attack.
