In 1990, HBO, in a collaboration with Consumer Reports Television, aired the first of three half-hour specials about children and advertising. The programs pulled back the curtain on many of the techniques and tricks used in TV commercials. Since the programs were clearly teaching "media literacy" the programs became popular with teachers and media educators alike. Alas, the videos are no longer available, although some libraries may still have them on the shelves. Now, here, for the first time, it is available. I have created some critical thinking questions and links to video clips so that you can teach "techniques of persuasion" and more. I have created a companion lesson plan that can be found here:

In this video Huckle and Lowly Worm learn about gravity. Gravity is a force on Earth that pulls things down. Throw a ball high in the air. Gravity won't let it stay there. Now we see why apples fall from the trees. We all would fly away without Earth's gravity. This is a good teaching resource for a thematic/science unit on gravity and Earth. Elementary students will enjoy this video (01:10).

In this video segment adapted from Shedding Light on Science, learn about the dispersion of light, the electromagnetic spectrum, and how sunlight contains a range of wavelengths (photons of differing energy). Isaac Newton investigated sunlight by shining it through a glass prism; after the prism refracted the light, he saw a spectrum of colors. He recognized that sunlight was made up of many colors, which could not be further separated when passed through a second prism. Drops of water in the air have the same dispersion effect. In the video, a bowl of water is used to simulate a giant raindrop to show how the differing angles of refraction of different wavelengths create rainbows. Run time 03:55.
