This lecture is a segmented 17-minute video which has a transcript to help students follow the sophisticated presentation. The narrator compares primary source material written by Frederick Law Olmsted and published in a collection called The Cotton Kingdom to the letters written by a kidnapped African-American author named Solomon Northup.
