Word Magnets is a simple to use web tool that will take a piece of text and break it into individual magnets which can be moved around the screen, resized, removed, color coded, grouped, sorted and so on. New magnets can also be added at any point. This is a great tool to use with sequencing, language study, and can be molded to fit many areas of the curriculum. What is the difference between a permanent magnet and an electromagnet? In this workshop, fourth-grade students build an electromagnet by winding a wire around a rivet and attaching the ends to battery terminals. The students first predict how many washers they can pick up with the help of their electromagnet and then perform the experiment to test their predictions. After the number of washers is recorded and the results are discussed, the students engage in a group discussion about practical uses for electromagnets.

Neodymium magnet + copper pipe = magnetic damping:When a magnetic field moves through a conductor a current called an Eddy current is induced in the conductor due to the magnetic field’s movement. The flow of electrons in the conductor creates an opposing magnetic field to the magnet which results in damping of the magnet and causes heating inside of the conductor similar to heat buildup inside of power cords. The loss of energy used to heat up the conductor is equal to the loss of kinetic energy by the magnet.One note of caution if you decide to try this, these magnets are not for unsupervised children. In fact, everyone should be careful: Neodymium magnets larger than a half inch are very strong and should be handled with extreme care since they can be dangerous… It is best to stick with neodymium magnets of quarter inch diameter or less.
