Freedom and Individuality: "To Build a Fire" by Jack London
From vimeo.com, produced by What So Proudly We Hail
Jack London, like the unnamed man described in the story “To Build a Fire,” lived on the edge. Born in 1876, he died a short forty years later. As a young man, he was a full-fledged participant in the Yukon Gold Rush of 1897. Like many others at the time, London made the incredibly arduous journey by foot and handcrafted boat from Dyea in Alaska over Chilkoot Pass—a three-quarter-mile 45-degree-angled obstacle course—and eventually down the Yukon River into the Northwest Territories. The only gold he brought back, however, was an experience that he would mine for gems of literature for much of his writing life, as evidenced in his well known novels like "Call of the Wild" and "White Fang," as well as in “To Build a Fire” (1908), all of which draw on the places he saw and the people he met during those hope-filled and brutal times in the Northwestern Yukon territory.Watch editors Amy A. Kass and Leon R. Kass converse with guest host William Schambra (Hudson Institute) about the story. Everybody Promenade
From folkstreams.net, produced by LeAnn Erickson, Camille Seaman
When next you’re in Iowa, head northwest to Nemaha- population 102. As you enter, a sign states - "Nemaha, A MIGHTY Small Town". Blocks later another sign boasts "Nemaha, Home of the Farmall Promenade". The Farmall Promenade is an eight member, all male troupe of farmers who, as four male-'female' square dancing couples, perform across the Midwest. They have a passion for the dance but this isn’t your Grandpa’s square dancing. They perform all the favorites while perched atop antique tractors. "Everybody Promenade" is a portrait of the Farmall Promenade- a group of friends who love performing but it is equally a portrait of a rural community struggling to keep farms solvent while keeping community ties strong. Grab your partner and join the dance.

Rivers of Molten Lava High Up Pulama Pali - Kilauea Volcano Hawaii
From YouTube, produced by Leigh Hilbert
A surge of lava spews out of a rupture in the lava tube system and is heading down steep cliffs, or pali in Hawaiian. This strong flow is being supplied by lava from Kilauea Volcano's Pu`u O`o Crater four miles to the northwest. The rupture was at the 1600-foot elevation about four miles northwest of Kalapana Gardens, and directly above the old Royal Gardens subdivision. Further down the mountain I shot the rough a`a lava and chunky pahoehoe lava river, and at the 800-ft elevation.
