What are ecological systems, and what types of organisms live in these environments? This interactive activity adapted from the University of Alberta identifies the living and nonliving components of an animated ecosystem. Users are also invited to look at examples of mimicry, and identify which living things are producers and which are consumers. To help users complete the activity, key terms, including biotic and abiotic components, are defined.

This video gives good facts about the digestive system. Some key vocabulary words include the following: mouth, esophagus, small intestine, large intestine, liver, stomach, gall bladder, pancreas, rectum, digestive tract, anus, enzymes, stomach acid, and bile. Beware of audience-poop, rectum, and anus are discussed. This is a great resource to help build background knowledge for our students and would work well in conjunction with non-fiction texts on the human body and body systems. (3:31)

Video is hosted by a group of students. This video discusses the 1882 Emigrant Act and 1917 revision of the act. The 1882 Emigrant Act charged fifty cents for each immigrant. This money was to be used for the care of the immigrant. In 1907 the law was revised, $4.00 was charged on any immigrant for the first time. The increase in immigration changed education in America. Immigrants needed to learn English, without education it would be difficult to leave the cycle of poverty. Public and private systems developed. Video discusses the working conditions of the early 20th century and how the United States had changed during this time. Video shows some historical pictures and some students acting. Video is good quality and contains good information. Video is appropriate for middle elementary and middle school students. (08:46)

The Ocean is essential to life on Earth. Most of Earth's water is stored in the ocean. Although 40 percent of Earth's population lives within, or near coastal regions- the ocean impacts people everywhere. Without the ocean, our planet would be uninhabitable. This animation helps to convey the importance of Earth's oceanic processes as one component of Earth's interrelated systems. (06:01)

This video segment describes how the chambers of the heart contract and relax in synchrony to push blood through the pulmonary and systemic loops of the circulatory system. You'll see how the heart pumps oxygen-depleted blood to the lungs, where red blood cells acquire oxygen before travelling back to the heart and then on to the rest of the body. The video is nice illustration of how the circulatory and respiratory systems work together to carry in oxygen and remove waste. Closed captioning included. (03:14)

The Map of Science explores what science really is. In this video I investigate what makes a science a science, and how the scientific method is used in different subjects. I lay out all of the areas of human endeavor and show how they relate to each other from philosophy, through the sciences, to the social sciences, the arts and back to philosophy which I have drawn as a big doughnut. The main theme is that the scientific method is harder and harder to apply to subjects as they deal with more (more and more complex systems.(09:11)
